My YouTube Story: Kyle T. Garrett

by Kyle T. Garrett on May 22, 2010

“When I heard YouTube was celebrating it’s 5th Birthday (FiveYear) by encouraging users of the community to upload their YouTube Story, I got pretty excited! We all have such unique stories of what’s happened in our lives that’s lead us to where we are now. And especially for..

the special breed of video geeks like myself who have absolutely fallen in love with the idea of making videos and sharing them on the internet. One of the things that absolutely fascinated me about YouTube when I was brand new to the community, was to find people from all ages, across the globe, creating videos getting millions of views, all over the world! I remember one of my first thoughts was if that could ever be possible for me too. I’m sure any of you who have also ventured into making videos, have come up against some of the main challenges that I did when first get getting started.

Category 1:Outside World” Challenges
What I mean by this is questions like, “What camera do I use?” or “What editing software should I use?” or “How do you record good videos?” or “How do you actually edit a video?” ..I think you get the point. It’s what I call the “TK” the technical knowledge of the scripting, recording, editing, and publishing a video.

Category 2:Inside World” Challenges
For me, this is what I struggled with the most at first and still do from time-to-time. It’s those internal conversations you have with yourself all day long that may sound something like, “I wonder what my family and friends will think of me if start making videos?” or “Is it okay to really be me on camera or should I hide behind a social mask and pretend to be someone I’m not?” or “Do I really have what it takes to put myself out there and stand for things I believe in?” or “What if people don’t like me or my videos?” ..again, I think you get the point.

My goal with making this video, was to do my best in expressing the tremendous amount of growth I’ve personally experienced, with moving past all my old “inside world” challenges that don’t seem to effect me very much anymore, since uploading my very first YouTube video back in November of 2009. And that if you’re anything like me, a transparent and authentic medium like online video, could also be a way for you to move past some of the limiting beliefs holding you back in your life.

I sincerely hope you enjoy the video and look forward to reading any comments and questions down below!”

Love, Kyle
